Hemet Local Guide - History - The History of Mission Grove Realty

The History of Mission Grove Realty

Who we are and how we got our name:     As a Valley resident of more than 20 years, It is a mere coincidence that Christopher Walker, one of Mission Grove Realty's founders, landed in the same Valley that his Great, Great Grandfather who had started a  Business there during the early 1900's. He eventually moved his business to the growing area nown known as Huntington Beach.

Christopher's Parents have been in the real estate industry for over 30 years and they always hoped that he would follow in their footsteps. After a successful, 18 year, career in sales and marketing, he fulfilled his destiny.

Together with his family and longtime friend, Graham Holmes, the idea of a local real estate office was born. It took nearly 14 months to develop a business plan that met the needs of the local community. The Valley was chosen not only because Christopher was, and had been a Valley resident. The valley was chosen  because of it's location and growth potential. The perfect place to make a positive impact in the industry , have the ability to grow and provide a much needed level of service to the community. Something that was important to all of us. A place where we would grow, with the community.

Client orientated and technology driven, we chose the tools, business model and location that would satisfy the needs of an ever changing market, our customers and agents allowing us to grow into the future and provide a level of service that would be unparalleled in our industry. In addition, we would attract industry professionals with the same vision and commitment.

A name was all that was left. Using our own names or franchise names was not an option. Using our names would be self serving and not part of our business model. Franchises were too restrictive when it came to marketing and created the need to self promote rather than promote for the benefit of our clients. So, we started working on names that would have ties to the valley and help to convey our commitment to the community.

Here is how we chose the Mission Grove Realty name:

In 1798, Mission San Louis Rey was given control of the local Indians and soon the Mission established a cattle and sheep rancho in the Valley to provide for food and textiles.

The Mission portion of our name was born.

After land control changed in 1821 when Mexico won independence from Spain, the land was broken into ranchos and given to Mexican loyalists and the Governors Family Members. The Estudillo Family, owners of the San Jacinto Viejo Land Grant, began selling portions of their rancho in the late 1800's bringing early American Pioneers and Investors  to the Valley. With the promise of Santa Fe Railroad's Spur into the Valley from Perris, and Irrigation established from  Lake Hemet, the agriculture industry sprung to life . Our Valley was soon planted with groves of various fruits and nuts.

Grove, was now the second portion of our name and the  Mission Grove Realty brand was born.

We hope that you have enjoyed a little of our history and look forward to creating history for others in the Valley. Whether it is in assisting with the purchase or sale of your home, the acquisition of investment property or land; Answering questions about our Valley or that are real estate related; Counseling with industry professionals about their career and helping to lead them in the right direction. We are here to help and provide you with the tools, experience and guidance needed to make an informed decision.

Thank you for visiting. We look forward to hearing from you,

The entire Staff of Friends at Mission Grove Realty

Hemet Local Guides - History of the Hemet and San Jacinto Valley

mission grove realty presents hemet history

Hemet Local Guides by Mission Grove Realty (951) 927-8940

The Hemet and San Jacinto Valley is rich is history. One of the most recent discoveries in the Valley are fossilized remains of  early Mastodons which inhabited the Valley over 50,000 years ago and are on display at the Western Center for Archeology and Paleontology right here in the Valley.

  • The first modern inhabitants were members of the Cahuilla Indian tribe. Cahuilla (pronounced Kah-we-ah) means "masters" or "powerful one" and 2,500 years ago these fiercely resourceful people learned to survive the blistering temperatures of the dry, unyielding land by digging wells. They devised creative methods for using local plant life such as acorns, mesquite and pinyon. And they built their homes (known as a kish) from reeds, branches and brush.
  • In the early 1800's, the Valley became a cattle ranch for Mission San Luis Rey and was called Rancho San Jacinto. In 1842, when the missions were broken up by the Mexican government, the land was awarded to Jose Antonio Estudillo . The Estudillo Mansion is Located near downtown San Jacinto and is currently under restoration.
  • Through the efforts of local landowners, the creation of the Hemet Dam which provided water for irrigation and the first railroad to the Valley, Hemet started to prosper and develop. Area farmers used irrigation water from the Hemet Dam irrigation water to grow alfalfa fields, fruit orchards and row crops, particularly potatoes. Some areas are still producing citrus, potatoes and other crops. Cattle and dairy farming soon became a major source of local revenue and some dairies still remain in light of development and rising land values.
  • On January 11, 1910, residents voted to incorporate as a city and formal incorporation was on January 20, 1910.
  • One Valley claim to fame is  the annual Ramona Pageant. Events which took place in the Valley were the inspiration for  Helen Hunt Jackson's book, Ramona. From 1923 the people of Hemet and San Jacinto have participated in the pageant that is held each spring.
  • Hemet changed dramatically in the 1960's.  Sierra Dawn, the country's first "mobile home subdivision" in which individual lots were sold was built during that time and other retirement areas were soon developed creating a virtual "Mecca" for retirees from all over the country.
  • Florida Ave., the main artery through Hemet was, by many accounts,  the Country's wealthiest street, per capita, second only to Wall Street. With a swelling population of retirees and nearly 40 banks on the 5 mile stretch of Florida Ave, it would not be hard to believe.
  • Many years have passed since the incorporation of Hemet and much has changed. The Valley has seen it's average age decrease from nearly 70 in it's "Hemet is Heaven" retirement community days to just under 40. Over 30,000 new homes have been constructed in recent years with the same amount soon to come and in various stages of development creating much need for commercial development, road improvements and ancillary services.
  • Hemets major sources of employment are Service industries, hospitality and Medical services. Edlebrock, Hilton Reservations Worldwide, Skyline and many others also call the Valley home and provide sources of employment for Valley Residents. Technology based companies would benefit from the Valley's central location to major Cities, affordable housing and source of labor yet, have not made it into the valley....as of now. Like water, Technology based companies will be the catalyst for the next portion of our Valley's history.
  • The formation of the Valley Economic Development Corporation under the direction of it's many members, directors and the watchful eye of Executive Director Diane Wirth, has been instrumental in bringing much needed change to the face of the valley. Helping to locate companies in the industries of recreation, entertainment, technology/manufacturing, communications that may be looking to expand or relocate to Southern California and would be compatible with the valley's future needs has been the VEDC's primary goal.

Well, here you have a little history of the Hemet and San Jacinto Valley. If you would like to learn more, please call Mission Grove Realty  (951) 927-8940 and we will provide you with area contacts, points of interest, area maps  and more of our Valley's rich history. When visiting Hemet, stop by and say hi. We would love to share more about our valley with you.

Hemet Local Guide - Museums - The Western Center for Archeology and Paleontology

Hemet local guides by Mission Grove Realty

Hemet and San Jacinto City Guides by Mission Grove RealtyHemet and San Jacinto Local Guides by Mission Grove Realty (951) 927-8940

Western Center for Archeology and Paleontology:

The western center for archeologyThe largest mastodon discovered in the Western United States is right here in the Hemet - San Jacinto Valley. The Western Center is a welcome addition to our Valley and provides a look back into our Valley's rich past. A departure from the bland architecture typically found here.  The Western Center is an architectural masterpiece housing fossilized remains and archaeological artifacts from around our Valley. The facility also contains research and education facilities and a storage facility rivaling that of any major metropolitan museum. A secure, climate controlled facility will house fossils and artifacts on a scale rivaling that of Los Angeles' La Brea Tar Pits. On a tour during construction, the director said that bone for bone, fossil for fossil, the Western Center's collection will exceed that of La Brea's. Not only that, the Centers collection will be clean (The bulk of La Brea's collections came from the tar pits and therefore covered and impregnated with tar).

The Western Center for Archaeology and Paleontology provides visitors with important clues to the Valley's past and provide cultural, educational and financial-economic contributions to the Inland Empire as well as the state of California and reaching far beyond to students and educators around the globe. The Western Center's recent completion is a welcome and much needed addition to the area.

Features of this state of the art facility include:

  • A dramatic 156-foot-long exterior walkway that greets you with an overhead life-on-earth time-line that represents geologic time periods under a stylized pergola of steel.
  • The lobby features 24-foot-high walls with a cross section of earth, embedded with fossils at different levels of depth to show visitors when different species had inhabited the area.  Fossils include those from a dire wolf, mastodon, bison, mammoth and giant sloth.
  • Display areas in the Main Hall include:
  1. The Big Dam Hole, which introduces visitors to the Diamond Valley Lake construction process. Dug from rock and dirt to a depth of 270 feet and enclosed on 3 sides by earthen dams creating Diamond Valley Lake , the 4.5-mile lake bed produced most of the center's discoveries. It also shows a high-tech GIS sliding interactive map, "California through time," that reveals how the state's geography has changed over hundreds of thousands of years.
  2. "Historic Archaeology" shows an early homestead that represents a typical Southern California home from the 1880s. with artifacts and insights into the Valley's more recent history.
  3. "Prehistoric Archaeology" reveals how native people of the Cahuilla and Luiseno native Indian Tribes lived and survived in the Valley.
  • A state of the art theater in the round features Max, as big as day, walking through the Valley as he would have thousands of years before us. The theatre's design includes "rocks" for seating and a sound system embedded in a "floating floor" to give viewers the feeling that Max is right in the room with them.  A must see when visiting.
  • "Snapshots in Time" is within the  10,000-square-foot main exhibit hall which includes expansive, glass covered,  pit carved into the floor of the museum. The pit recreates the dig that took place near the Center at the Diamond Valley Lake project to the East and features the remains of "Little Stevie," a mastodon that dates back 50,000 years, "Max," a 10-foot-tall, 13,000-year-old mastodon (the largest found in the Western US), "Xena," a 12-foot-tall 10,000-year-old mammoth, and a giant ground sloth that is nearly seven feet tall. There are also many interactive exhibits for children and adults alike. Discover the difference between Archeology and Paleontology and what role each science plays. You can also cast your own "fossil" from molds of actual fossils recovered from the area, create rubbings of medallions contained in the exhibits and much more.
  • An  Education and Conference Center, which provides media and classroom space for students from elementary school to post-graduate researchers, research labs and storage space for fossils and artifacts recovered from the area.

We are sure that you will enjoy a visit to the Western Center. The Center is open Tuesday trough Sunday from 10am to 5pm. There is a Museum book store and gift shop that is open during regular museum hours. Consider purchasing a membership* when visiting so that you can return throughout the year to watch the progress of the Center and see upcoming exhibits. Regular prices for admission are:

Free to Members - $8.00  Adults (13 and over) - $6.50  Seniors (62+) - $6.00  Youth (5 to 12)
